Chapter Eight

Zach always enjoyed the days between Christmas and New Year. The medical center was open but not busy and he had the opportunity to catch up on paperwork.

He glanced at his watch. It was nearly five-thirty and time to finish for the day. His colleague was on call for the evening’s house visits, so it would be straight home, shower then a nice dinner with Nicholas. Beef bourguignon, if he remembered correctly from their conversation that morning.

As he packed away and washed his hands, his thoughts strayed to Brandon, as they often had since Christmas Day.

They hadn’t heard from him, and they hadn’t been to the deli. Why would they need to? They had a full fridge and full cupboards. And without a phone number for him, they couldn’t even find out if he’d enjoyed the rest of his birthday.

Zach was sure it suited Nicholas to have a few days to let his guilt go from a raging fire to fading embers. But Zach was itchy to see Brandon again. Perhaps it was the doctor in him, the need to follow up and care, or maybe it was because Brandon had wriggled beneath his skin.

“Goodbye, Judy. Are you going home soon?” Zach smiled at the receptionist as he walked through the building.

“Yes, Doctor Simmons, in about ten minutes. Sister Taylor is just finishing a dressing and then we can lock up.”

“Good. Thank you for all your help today.”

“My pleasure.”

Zach went through the automatic door then turned left toward the car park. He’d brought Nicholas’ Fiesta to work that morning—Nicholas had wanted the Discovery to visit a family on a farm—and he hoped the grotty old thing would start.

The temperature had dipped further since Christmas Day and now the sky was clear and the air sparkled with the promise of a heavy frost.

He delved into his bag and found the car keys.

“Hey!”

“What the…?” Zach peered into the shadows, his muscles tensing, fight or flight kicking in.

“Sorry, didn’t mean to frighten you.” From beside a black motorbike stepped Brandon. He was holding a shiny helmet and dressed from head to feet in leathers. Light from a nearby streetlamp caught in his hair.

“Ha, you did a bit.” Zach smiled, relieved it wasn’t some druggie hoping for an illegal refill. Not that he’d had any bother with that in Mindle.

“I just wanted to see how you were?”

“All good, not too busy. Often, we’re bogged under with flu this time of year, but good uptake of the vaccine is serving us well.”

Brandon nodded.

“Did you have a nice birthday?”

“Quiet, felt a bit…you know…dry after Christmas Day.”

“Yes, us too.” Zach shifted from one foot to the other.

“Got this though.” He gestured to the bike. “My parents sent me the cash for it.”

“Wow, good parents.”

He shrugged. “Dad did okay for himself. I guess I get spoiled as I’m an only child. Not that I’m complaining.”

Zach studied the glossy bike. It had fat wheels and low handlebars. The gas tank had scarlet flames trailing over it. “You be careful on it.
